TRANSITIONING TO Cal POLY
Congratulations on getting accepted into the graduate program in Computer Science and deciding to attend. Make sure you officially accept the admission offer before proceeding with the next steps. This page provides some guidance on transitioning to both the school and San Luis Obispo.
ACADEMIC NEXT STEPS
One of the biggest actions you can do that will help you graduate sooner is identifying a thesis advisor and topic. You should start this process before you arrive on campus, as described here. When contacting Computer Science professors use your new Cal Poly email address since most faculty don’t have access to lists of newly admitted students.
The second major activity you will need to do is register for classes. The university does not do this for you. If you do not register for any class your admissions offer is automatically rescinded. The registration process is described at https://registrar.calpoly.edu/registration-overview . The Degree Progress Report described in the registration overview is not applicable to graduate students. If you have problems enrolling in classes or issues with pre-requisites, email Leanne Fiorentino <lfiorent@calpoly.edu> prior to your registration appointment.
LOGISTICAL NEXT STEPS
Relocating is a major undertaking, especially for students moving from other countries. Campus provides some resources to make the transition easier:
- The international center provides resources and services targeted specifically for international students, including information about visas. You can find their web site and contact information here.
- You can find information about on-campus housing and meal plans at https://www.calpoly.edu/life-at-cal-poly/housing-and-dining.
- You can find information about off-campus living at http://www.housing.calpoly.edu/off-campus-housing-guide .
